Tess Messina
da Vinci Visual Arts Capstone
My name is Tess and I would like to think that I am a kind and loving person. I was born in Portland and I have lived here all my life in the same house. In 2009, our house got a bit smaller when we adopted my little brother, Max. I live in that house with my mom, brother and dog. So far in my life I have been to Paris twice (that is where the pic is from). Once when I was 2 years old, and then again last summer. In the most recent trip, I lived on baguettes, butter, and swiss cheese. Some of my favorite things to do are to hang out with my two best friends, and take photos when we go on hikes. I make many different types of art, but I like working with different mediums. I also work best when I listen to music. In 6th grade I tried painting, but it was not really my thing. However, in the summertime, I love to paint in my free time. I also love to swim… most of the time in pools, but I also love going to the river to explore with my friends. Sometimes we even camp on the river. Last summer we went camping 12 times.
My capstone theme is “upcycle.” I chose this theme because lots of people give up on objects with potential, like baby food lids or people. People judge you for what you look like, but people and baby food lids should really be “judged” on what they could become. Looking back on the year I realize that I really experimented with a lot of different materials until I found something I that I liked. At the beginning of the year, I thought that capstone would be some big scary project, but it turned out to be fun. After a while, I realized that I needed to focus on a particular theme, so I decided upon upcycling. I took baby food lids, and hot glued can tabs to create something new. I make my art to express my feelings and to show others my view of the world.
