Bold, Black, Beautiful
Bold, Black, Beautiful, these are all words that I would use to describe the artwork of Maria Martinez. In all of her work I see power combined with beauty. You could say she has a rough side and a smooth side, shown through her glazing technique. These are just some thing that describe her works. Everyone knows that people come in all shapes and sizes, but did you know that so do pots. Maria brought back the art of black pottery after she was called upon to remake and revive the art of black pottery in 1908 . She make bowls, and pots. To me the most interesting part about her pottery is the method she makes it in and her inspiration.
If this art piece were mine I would call it Bold-Black-Beautiful, the reason I would chose this title is because of a book I was reading & a movie I watched on racism and no madder what color your skin is you are beautiful. I would like to believe that if you blow in one side you voice would ring out loud and clear on the other. I would like to believe that Maria made this work to show the world what we were able to do and can still do. Close your eyes, imagine you are inside her pot, what does it feel like... I would think it to be smooth. Also ask yourself why she made it. I think she make it to bring back a long lost art form.
Not only do I see jet black in her pottery but I see deep rich greens, and
Blues. Her lines are so rough with texture, and yet look so delicate. But to me the most interesting part about the glaze is how it’s done. If I were to be able to ask Maria one question about her works it would be what is the reason why she created black pottery. I also have been wondering if she would do it all over in a heartbeat?
What I truly do love about her pottery is the History being the making of it, also how none of the sides of the pot look egged, how they look so smooth. Something I wish was different would be I wish there was more like it. I would hope that people would see that this is not just a pot it is a story, that they just need to stick around a little bit to see how the story ends. I think to an untrained eye people would say it is just a mound of clay that looks like a pot, but to people who know what they're talking about it it is a story book & you just need to open the cover & start a to read a new chapter. I think the pottery and it’s story are both worth remembering.
